Be easy on yourself
“It will take some time to master the field. Studies have found it takes about five years of full-time employment to become an expert in a given field. So be easy on yourself the first few years. Be okay with asking questions, seeking help, and following”
A language we all speak
“View behavior as a form of communication. A language we all speak but to which we seldom listen. So ask the question, ‘What is the student saying or telling us with this behavior?’ Secondly, view behavior as serving a function or filling a need. In this case, you can ask, ‘Is there a more socially acceptable means of meeting this student’s need?’ In either case, your behavior support plans should revolve around teaching the student replacement behaviors.”
Stay engaged
“The term ‘lifelong learning’ is more than taking a certain number of continuing education units (CEU) every year. It includes daily reflection, integration of experiences, and situational awareness. Lifelong learning is integrating the feedback of failure, watching for better ways of interacting with others, seeking to improve, and celebrating successes. Do not measure growth by the number of seminars attended or books read but rather by interactions with others and the growth of students. Stay engaged.”
