Originally published in 1862 to raise money for his now-fatherless children, the Life of James W. Jackson: The Alexandria hero, the slayer of Ellsworth, the first martyr in the cause of southern independence is an interesting look at the life of a man made famous (or infamous) at the start of the Civil War.

Jackson shot and killed Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, commander of the 11th New York Infantry (the Fire Zouaves) on May 24th, 1861, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was, in turn, immediately killed by Corporal Francis E. Brownell, a member of Ellsworth’s regiment. In one tragically-defining moment, the Union and Confederacy both had the first martyrs for their respective causes.

This 21st century reprint showcases a literary curiosity of a time when the nation was embroiled in a life-or-death struggle and a look at it from the Southern point of view.
